On 22 October 2013, UNORCID hosted the first Green Economy Stakeholder Coordination Meeting. In the context of Indonesia’s transition to a Green Economy, it is crucial that partners from all sectors coordinate and have an opportunity to mutually reinforce each other’s work. By bringing together stakeholders from the Government of Indonesia, civil society, bilateral and multilateral organisations, and the private sector, the meeting provided a space for information sharing, improving and validating a database of identified ‘Green Economy’ projects, and developing a coordination agenda.
The meeting was structured around three presentations: Dr. Nirarta Samadhi, Deputy Head of the President’s Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight (UKP4) delivered a presentation on Green Economy mainstreaming in Indonesia. Dr. Sonny Mumbunan, Senior Economist of the President’s Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight (UKP4) outlined Indonesia’s commitment to transitioning to a Green Economy. Finally, Mr. Johan Kieft, Head of UNORCID’s Green Economy Unit, presented an overview on database work entitled, “Towards A Comprehensive Green Growth Project Database in Indonesia.”.
The three presentations generated a lively day of discussions and sharing of ideas and observations by participants. Particular emphasis was placed on the identification of methodologies and definitions for green growth and green economy as a good starting point for coordination between stakeholders. Emphasis was also placed on the need for coordination mechanisms in specific areas of Green Economy (e.g. sustainable consumption). Participants noted that topical discussions were an adequate and useful format for further Green Economy Coordination meetings. This would allow stakeholders to exchange on lessons learned, and get a better understanding of the landscape in their field of work. Finally, stakeholders were particularly interested in efforts linking and coordinating the different types of existing databases (e.g. to Indonesian environmental laws and regulations, or to general climate change activities).
To further enhance coordination in the field of Green Economy, UNORCID will organise the Second Green Economy Stakeholder Coordination Meeting on 4 December 2013. Mr. Pavan Sukhdev, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador will present his work on a green economy transition in Indonesia during this meeting.
